Equity in education has many branches of social, political and economic aspects influencing the public education of students in Chicago. In the Chicago Districts there are over 100 high schools that include 13 International Baccalaureate programs, nine selective enrollment schools, 28 vocational career academies, and six military training programs. The variety of educational programs available is an example of rights as Americans to choose. This right to choose an education reflects the deep set capitalist values in education. However, the question is do the different programs available create equity in the education of Chicago, or unintentionally sort and categorize students, limiting their knowledge, therefore their opportunities?
Having educational options also leads to certain schools or programs receiving a more advanced and desired education than other schools. The unequal quality of education in Chicago Public Schools means that excellence is being compromised by equity.
